The Matrix, Steak, Sushi and Blue and Red Pill Cocktails

Dinner and a Movie: The Matrix, Asian Fusion Steak, and Sushi Platter, Blue Hawaiian and a Negroni Embark on a mind-bending fusion of cinema and cuisine with our blog featuring the pairing of the groundbreaking film "The Matrix" with an Asian Fusion Steak and Sushi Platter, accompanied by symbolic "Blue Pill" and "Red Pill" cocktails. Join us as we explore how this extraordinary combination blurs the lines between reality and flavor, transporting you on a culinary journey that mirrors the futuristic allure of the movie. The Film Written and directed by the Wachowski brothers (now sisters Lana and Lilly), the 1999 science fiction action movie THE MATRIX was the project its creators chose to pursue following the success of their first film, “Bound”. As the proposed production would be budgeted at in excess of $60 million dollars, The Wachowskis hired artists to create a shot-by-shot 600-page storyboard to convince Warner Brothers to commit. It worked. Once a segment of several minutes of footage was provided, the studio was said to be in “total support of the movie”.   The story is basically that of a computer hacker, Neo, and the journey he makes to an underworld that challenges all he holds to be true and real. The “Matrix” of the title is a “virtual world pulled over [humans’] minds to hide them from the truth” — that they are slaves.  The film stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss, among others, and features substantial martial arts choreography. The fighting includes sequences using “wire-fu”,  utilizing wires and pulleys to create the illusion of the suspension of gravity and superhuman strength. Under the fight direction of Chinese fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, the actors trained for several months prior to the beginning of filming in August of 1998.  Filming occurred primarily at Fox Studios in Sydney, Australia, and cinematographic duties were helmed by frequent Wachowski collaborator Bill Pope. Additional contributors included  John Gate (visual effects), Dane A. Davis (sound effects), Don Davis (score), Owen Paterson  (production design), and Zach Staenberg.   Among the many dazzling effects within “The Matrix” is what came to be known as “bullet time”, whereby an action sequence slows while the camera appears to pivot around the subjects. The effect was actually achieved using multiple cameras and the employment of an  “old art photography technique known as time-slice photography”.  The Reception “The Matrix” opened on March 24, 1999, earning $27.8 million in its opening weekend, and went on to gross over $171 million in its initial run. To date, “The Matrix” has tallied over $463  million, and has gone on to become a franchise of three additional films.   In Micheal O’Sullivan’s review for the Washington Post, he wrote: ” “The Matrix” is just one big,  fat, honking comic book of a sci-fi-martial arts adventure flick. It goes over the top, comes back around the bottom, and then goes back over the top again. It has stu-freakin’-pendous  special effects, gangster sang-froid out the wazoo, and a storyline that makes only as much  sense as it has to.”  The film fared very well awards-wise, grabbing Oscars for Visual Effects, Sound Effects, Sound  Effects Editing and Editing, BAFTAS for Sound and Visual Effects, and won Best Film and Best  Direction at the Saturn Awards. “The Matrix” is “considered to be among the greatest science fiction films of all time”, and was selected for preservation in the United States Film Registry in  2012.  To escape the Matrix — a question often asked by fans — requires critical thinking, questioning authoritative assumptions, and the development of empathy.
