The principles of design are the basic principles that direct the composition of elements of art. The elements of design create balance, harmony, and unity through art. They are vital because they allow the artist to arrange the details of art so that it is pleasing to the eye. So, design principles frame the creative process for mediums like graphic design, painting, architecture, sculpture, or even an idea.


Balance refers to the way visual elements spread throughout a composition. Therefore, a balanced design is pleasing to the eye and makes it easy for the viewer to follow the various components. Design can achieve balance by placing elements in symmetrical or asymmetrical balance or giving them a uniform weight.


Contrast is the design principle that refers to the way elements differ from each other. Different colors, textures, shapes, sizes, or any other aspect creates a contrast between two or more pieces. This principle is crucial because it helps generate interest and depth through white space and negative space.

Principles of Design: Emphasis

Emphasis is the visual weight an element can be made more important than others in composition. You can achieve emphasis by making fonts larger and placing them closer to the center of attention. They are thereby making it brighter or darker for the audience. Emphasis is essential because it helps guide a person’s eye through artwork and allows them to see what is most important about it.


Movement deals with how you arrange artwork to create a sense of balance in a composition. For example, it can achieve this by placing elements in a diagonal line, using curved lines, or any other method that creates a sense of movement. Movement is significant because it changes our respective through an understanding of action. And in turn, it makes a singular aspect of art more interesting to view.

Principles of Design: Rhythm

Rhythm understands how design elements are arranged in a composition to create an organized pattern or flow. Symmetrical design is an important feature because it helps guide the audience through a continuation of the art. Finally, rhythm allows them to see beauty from the forces at play.

Unity is the principle of design that references alignment throughout an artwork so that the design project works together to create a sense of harmony and consistency. For example, similar shapes, sizes, or any other element creates balance and cohesion in a composition. And unity is vital because elements in relation create order and structure.


Variety are concept ideas that approach elements of design across a range of component emotions. Different color combinations, textures, shapes, dimensions, or any other element of art creates variety by contrasting the aesthetics. Variety is substantial because it helps generate interest and depth in an artwork.
