Vermont Nut Free Chocolates began with a smaller allergy and expanded to a large customer base
Vermont Nut Free Chocolates is located in Colchester, VT just north of Burlington.
Any parent whose child suffers a nut allergy understands the challenge of double and triple-checking ingredients and the plaguing fear of an allergen somehow slipping through their constant safeguards.
They also know the frustration of having to restrict candy and other treats for fear they could somehow induce an allergic reaction that could potentially threaten their child’s life. One company in VT decided to change all of that—at least where chocolate is concerned.
Vermont Nut Free Chocolates was founded in 1998 by a mother who knew the struggle of nut allergies all too well. Gail Elvidge’s son, Tanner, suffered an extreme allergic reaction at only eight months old. Determined to protect Tanner while still allowing him to enjoy treats the same way other children do, Elvidge and her husband started making homemade, allergy-friendly chocolate that was completely free of nuts or cross-contamination from nut products.
What was born from a love for their son has turned into a burgeoning enterprise. Today, Vermont Nut Free Chocolates employs 30 employees and a full menu of products that can be found in 500 stores nationwide.
The Elvidges are committed to the Vermont Nut Free Chocolates company mission of “providing quality chocolates and treats that are safe for those with tree and peanut allergies.”
They manage to fulfill that promise without compromising on quality or taste, saying, “We truly believe that those with and without nut allergies will find our gourmet chocolates to be among the finest they have ever tasted.”
While their company tagline is “The finest gourmet chocolates for everyone,” Vermont Nut Free Chocolates serves a segment of the population that often goes without the same quality of candy and chocolate as allergy-free people enjoy.
The family’s original goal of providing dietary normalcy to her son has blossomed into something that has touched thousands of families.
One of the many testimonials on the company website reads, “What you provide is amazing for children with life-threatening nut allergies to find holiday treats free from nuts is so hard we use special things like your Skippers for special treats—often on top of your special holiday chocolate candies. It means so much to a child who is so often told, ‘No, you can’t have that. It’s not safe.’”
Another customer says, “I want to thank you so much for what you do every day! I can make sure my grandson (four years old) who has a severe tree nut allergy, never misses the joy of great chocolate. Especially around all the holidays.”
And speaking of the holidays, the company offers a range of products to celebrate Christmas, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Easter. Each with a promise of safety that doesn’t sacrifice taste. With gift towers, chocolate pops, boxed chocolates, and more, Vermont Nut Free Chocolates is adding a little bit of extra joy to the holidays in the most delicious of ways.
