Apple Cider Cocktail Recipes to Usher in Fall

Whatever your liquor of choice, there’s an apple cider cocktail for you

Fall is here and with it comes plenty of reason to get creative in the kitchen — or at the wet bar. One of my favorite fall drinks is the apple cider cocktail. And what’s great, is whatever liquor you prefer, it likely goes pretty great with apple cider.

We compiled this list of six stellar cocktails, offering a variety of hot and cold, easy and more involved. And we broke it down by liquor: bourbon, rum, vodka, gin, and even tequila.

One common refrain among all the home mixologists who crafted these recipes: Don’t cut corners on apple cider. As the folks at Umami put it, “For the best results use real fresh pressed apple cider and not apple juice or anything that has added sugar in it. Fresh apple cider should be a little cloudy and taste like you’re eating juicy apples right from the tree.”

Cold Apple Cider with Bourbon

This easy-peazy treat from TidyMom.net will have you choosing apple cider over pumpkin beer this fall. It calls for apple cider, bourbon, a splash of ginger beer or ginger ale, lemon juice and — if you’re looking to impress friends — an apple slice, thyme spring and cinnamon stick for garnish.

Allison Sousan, the youngest daughter of the woman behind TidyMom.net, suggests serving the cocktail on the rocks and using any mid-range bourbon. “I used Jim Beam and loved it, but feel free to use whatever you have on hand, or whatever brand you prefer,” she writes.

Not into bourbon? She also suggests swapping it out for any other dark liquor.

Hot Apple Cider with Bourbon

The only trick to this three-ingredient cocktail is to start early. The folks at Umami say, when they head to their cabin in the fall, they simmer apple cider with cinnamon sticks most of the day. But at minimum, they recommend simmering it for 30 minutes.

Spiked Caramel Apple Cider

Leah from The Farmwife Drinks shares her secrets for an apple cider cocktail that uses Smirnoff’s caramel vodka. The cocktail has become just as important at her fall parties as hayrides around the farm. She serves it cold over ice, but it could also be served hot.

Apple Cider Gin Fizz

This cocktail from Yes to Yolks offers a whole new take on just what’s possible — and delicious — with apple cider. It calls for 11 ingredients, but it’s worth it. The key ingredients are apple cider and gin, but the recipe also includes an egg white and heavy cream. With that combo, you know it’s going to result in something special.
