About
New materialism is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry that considers the social and cultural implications of matter, materiality, and technology. It emerged in recent years as a response to traditional forms of philosophical dualism. Previously these forms separated mind from body, culture from nature, and self from other. In comparison, new materialists aim to bridge this divide by exploring how matter interacts with the environment and how it can shape the human experience. In addition, new materialism seeks to understand how physical objects and processes interact with our lives in complex ways, often leading to unexpected outcomes. This includes looking at what materials do and how their contexts shape them.
